In recent weeks, Defra announced that it cannot ban the use of wild animals in circuses because of a lawsuit taking place in Austria. But Jim Paice – Defra’s pro-hunt, pro-shoot, pro intensive farming Animal Welfare Minister – has been forced to admit that these legal proceedings don’t actually exist.
Jim Paice took ‘a pasting’ in parliament yesterday with MPs of all parties lining up to take potshots at him. Mary Creagh said of this fiasco, ‘It's an all-singing, all-dancing disaster from the worst performing department in Whitehall.’ Caroline Lucas asked Mr Paice ‘Could you have a bit of a spine?’

Together we can end this barbarism
The Minister is under pressure and animal protection groups are joining forces to end the use and abuse of wild animals in circuses. Your help is invaluable on this issue. Could you do these four things today?
1. Write to David Cameron to urge a ban on the use of wild animals in circuses at 10 Downing Street, London SW1A 2AA, or email
2. Sign the petition started by The Independent newspaper
3. Write to your MP and ask for them to state their support for a ban to the government and in letters to the national newspapers. (Who is my MP?)
4. Write to your local newspaper to state the case for a ban and urge the government to do the right thing. Contact Animal Aid to find out the address of your local paper.
